Allan has taught Music History classes geared towards older adults for the past ten years. Topic have included a wide range of studies, including classical, popular, jazz, and choral music. There are generally two 12-session courses each year, one held in the fall and one in the spring. There is also usually a short course in the summer. Allan composes and arranges music for worship, youth choirs and bands, women's and mixed choirs. He strives to create music that is enjoyable to perform and to hear. Some important influences include Victoria, Bach, Schubert, and Gershwin.

Allan is the Founding Director of SONAM, a chorus committed to creating high-quality sacred and secular choral music in a collaborative environment and giving back to the community. SONAM was founded in 2012 with two primary missions: to make excellent choral music, focusing primarily on the Renaissance and modern eras, and to support local non-profits through benefit concerts. SONAM consists of about 20 talented singers from central North Carolina and is led by Allan Friedman, director, and Jane Lynch, accompanist.
