Allan has taught Music History classes geared towards older adults for the past ten years. Topic have included a wide range of studies, including classical, popular, jazz, and choral music. There are generally two 12-session courses each year, one held in the fall and one in the spring. There is also usually a short course in the summer. Allan composes and arranges music for worship, youth choirs and bands, women's and mixed choirs. He strives to create music that is enjoyable to perform and to hear. Some important influences include Victoria, Bach, Schubert, and Gershwin.

Founded in 2012 by Dr. Allan Friedman, SONAM is a thirty-three member chamber chorus and 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization based in Durham, North Carolina.
SONAM is missioned to share remarkable music with remarkable communities, to the benefit of the same. Proceeds from SONAM benefit concerts convey directly to partner charitable organizations, each serving the common good in meaningful measure.
